The audit found that the Department of Health and Human Services’ (Department) Medicaid Provider Enrollment process did not ensure that only qualified providers were approved to provide services to Medicaid beneficiaries and to receive payments from North Carolina’s Medicaid program. As a result, there was an increased risk that providers whose actions posed a threat to patient safety were enrolled in Medicaid and could receive millions of dollars in improper payments from the State. Details about each item are provided in the Findings, Recommendations, and Responses section of the report. The Department agreed with the results of the audit. However, to ensure that readers are not misled and that the importance of the auditor findings are not minimized, the report includes a State Auditor’s Response.
