During the May meeting of the Local Government Commission (LGC), Jessica N. Holmes, J.D., State Auditor requested that officials from the City of Rocky Mount have an opportunity to address the LGC regarding their long pending application for approval of debt to finance the demolition of Fire Station #2 and construction of a new station.
The existing station is 46 years old, and renovation is not practical or feasible. The City’s discussions with the LGC regarding Fire Station #2 began in February 2023. During the July 9, 2024 LGC meeting, a motion to approve financing for Fire Station #2 succeeded.
Auditor Holmes commends the leaders of the City of Rocky Mount for their persistence in providing fire protection to the residents of Rocky Mount and stated, “My singular focus in advocating for the approval of the fire station financing was the safety of the residents of Rocky Mount. The new fire station will reduce response times and every second is important when a home is on fire.”
